Not an average #hashtag

#Hashtags Instagrammers use hashtags to find content that interests and inspires them. Instagram uses hashtags to categorise similar content. So with the use of hashtags on social posts, the ultimate aim for anyone is to appear at the #top posts list, but this is where it gets a little tricky here. To get to the top post IG looks at engagement - Likes, Comments, Shares, Saves etc. Although using hashtags in posts makes the content searchable, it doesn’t guarantee that posts will show up on search feed.


Here is my list of top 5 best practices while using hashtags in your posts:


  1. Make sure that the tags are related and relevant to your post. Nobody owns a hashtag. Hence nothing can guarantee that your post will definitely show up in search results, however if you still stand a better chance at showing up in search results if your post is performing well. It will algorithmically show the post to similar looking audiences..

  2. Use a mix of broad and niche keywords. With very popular tags, you will find it difficult to stand out hence a good mix of keywords will help you gain better visibility. Popular and generic hashtags will give your post the initial boost and visibility, niche hashtags will make your post visible to the relevant audience.

  3. Using hashtags in Instagram Stories, Feed Posts, IGTV Content can help people find more of your content. While Feed and IGTV allow up to 30 hashtags, its better to place them either in the content or the comments section.

  4. Check out for #banned hashtags - Ensure that your hashtags are not blacklisted by Instagram. It can do more damage than benefit your brand equity.

  5. Spend time on the Insights tool of your business page and understand your followers. As you start building your brand, gain more followers and engagements.
